Alberta’s tax plan for 2012 was recently announced. Here are some of the highlights:

  • The Alberta Scientific Research and Experimental Development Tax Credit will be enhanced by $25 million.  Since 2009, companies conducting research and development in Alberta have been eligible for this provincial tax credit.  However, since its launch, stakeholders have made it clear to the government that deducting federal investment tax credit when calculating Alberta’s credit called the grind reduces the competitiveness of Alberta’s program compared to those of other provinces. Therefore, starting March 12, 2012, Alberta will eliminate the grind.  This move will enhance the program by about $25 million annually or about 35%.

Spouses’ tax returns are related.  Spouses have a number of ways to reduce taxes by splitting income, deductions and credits so it is important that spouses’ tax returns are filed together.  This will ensure that you are not missing out on any information from your spouse’s tax return that could cause you to file an incorrect tax return.

On your tax return, you are required to report what your marital status was as of December 31st of the tax year.  This is done by selecting the appropriate status on your return:  Married, Living Common-Law, Widowed, Divorced, Separated, Single.

Exceptions to choosing your Income Tax Package PDF Print E-mail

In some instances, choosing your Income Tax & Benefit Package based on where you resided last December 31, 2011 does not apply. Here are the exceptions:

  • If, on December 31, 2011, you had residential ties in more than one province or territory, use the package for the province or territory where you have your most important residential ties.
